“For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, Mission”
Second Session | October 2 – 27, 2024
The theologian Massimo Faggioli has called the Synod on Synodality “the most important moment in the life of the Catholic Church since Vatican II.” From our initial editorial in October 2021 that focused on the opening of the Synod, through our June 2022 synthesis report submitted to the General Secretariat and our coverage of projects and institutions committed to advancing the spirit of synodality, Today’s American Catholic has been reporting on, reflecting about, and participating in this global exercise in dialogue and conversion for the past three years. Along with countless other media outlets, lay-led nonprofits, Small Christian Communities, reform organizations, conferences, institutes, associations, parishes, dioceses, trained facilitators, active listeners, and conversers in the Spirit, we’ve been attempting to learn by doing this renewed method of ecclesial communion—and, in the process, trying to figure out what a “synodal church” might look like in practical terms. Now that we’ve arrived to the second and concluding session of the Synod, we are pleased to announce that we will be “on location” in Rome to cover the first two weeks of the proceedings. We’ll follow the events as they unfold and publish our daily reports below. We’ll also incorporate coverage of lay groups and movements present at the Synod, and weave in impressions of the art, culture, history, and landscape of Rome.
